"Prepared Americans" at Kettle Gallery, Dallas
The series “Prepared Americans” depicts portraits of women clad in tactical gear, gas masks, ski masks, and American flags inhabiting bunkers and rooms full of video screens. Call of Duty meets Feminism meets Omega Man.
The inspirations for this work are the constant stream of violent images on modern computer, television, movie, and gaming screens, and “Are You Ready? A Guide to Citizen Preparedness” issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Statement...In a conscious decision, I have painted all the models from life, and avoided using photographs, computers, projectors, or any modern machines other than electric light. When the grid goes down, I will not need electricity to make paintings. A portrait painted from a live model is the only form of art that is capable of transmitting such an intimate sense of lived presence over so great a distance in time.
My choice of female models in typically male settings provokes the viewer to re examine patriotism, feminism, and the ancient human urge to wage war on other tribes.
